T.D. has gone on a whirlwind adventure to her Nana's house for a... wait for it... drum roll please... a solid week! I hardly know what to do with myself. I know the time will fly by as I've already got the following planned.Hours of reviews to conduct and write up (that includes pureeing many a vegetable and fruit and freezing it)Hours working here. I must reach Bongo the Clown. Though really? Asking for Bongo never stops being funny. One baseball game (the last at RFK..sniff, sniff if I were actually a Nats fan. Go SOX!)Some light yard work (I know the excitement doesn't end)Getting myself to a bridal shop where I will cringe as I'm measured publicly for yet another bridesmaid dress. (Don't get me wrong I love the honor I just don't love the markup or the dyed shoes.)Possibly relaxing and … [Read more...]
So what are WE doing?
Yesterday's post about the myth vs. the reality brought up some interesting questions from myself and from some readers. American women have it better than we think, but our work is far from over. The system is old, it's not working, and we need to tweak it and in some cases give it a massive overhaul. So what is an already busy working and not working woman/mother to do? Well, I don't have all the answers but I do feel pretty strongly about the fact that years ago our mothers really broke through the proverbial glass ceiling and are the ones who started things like flex time, shared work schedules, daycare centers in the office and such. I look at that and I think, "well, what have I done?" I've just taken as much as I could from the whole thing and haven't offered anything new. That my … [Read more...]
Not a Myth, and Not Quite a Reality Yet
Is the grass really greener on the other side of the pond?I wish that in the mires of my office, in the hours I spent toiling at my desk in corporate America I had come across this article. It would have given me a bit more perspective. A whole look at how we American’s cannot use the pat answer (and yes, I’m guilty of it too) that the Europeans have it all figured out. They don’t either. So Ms. American ladies, while you are perhaps feeling a bit guilty about being at work or that maybe your company is a tad unfair consider this article and know that in some ways American women do have it better.“Only one in five Europeans works some sort of flexible schedule, as compared with almost 30 percent in the United States. And because European companies have traditionally invested less in … [Read more...]

For the Birds? Before the Birds!

I woke up at 4:30 a.m. today. Great googly moogly why?!? The birds weren't even up yet. Darkness stole every corner of the house. Except the basement. I left the light on. The basement, my Fortress of Solitude, also known as the office. I would love to think of it as the Bat Cave, but it's not. The tiny corner I have created just puts my back to the clutter of retired baby gear, tools, the laundry monster's cave, and some old, unused appliances. Sometimes I think someone might be living back there, then I realize I'm just paranoid. I'm up today because I'm hungry. I'm hungry for work. I am looking for, no, I NEED a good writing job. Something that pays more than ten bucks for 800 words. Who are those people anyway? I've been working for free too much lately. I took on a lot of free … [Read more...]
One!
Awww, it's so cute, look at that sweet little one year old blog! I can hardly believe it myself. It's already been a year. In some ways, and this is so tired and predictable of me, it's felt bone gnawingly long and in other aspects it's raced by faster than a hamster on smack. T.D. is one now as well and ever the dictator. She throws her hands up to show displeasure, delights in shrieking loudly, and now walks around with her chest puffed out and her hands behind her back, just like Hitler did to hide the shakes he had in his hands. Isn't that precious?I looked back this morning at some old posts, had a few laughs, cringed at some moments, and realized that I did achieve my goal of staying at home, and also managed to keep up the blog, and start a new career. What a wild year it's been. … [Read more...]
