This weekend was a bizarre mix of emotions for me. Full of activities, some serious down time and me crying into a plate of eggs. It could have spelled disaster but I was determined, though weary, to not let someone else’s bad, ill-timed comments get the best of me, especially on my birthday weekend. All of it, mashed together in its messy mix made me realize that there are three things I know for sure.
1. Red Lipstick Can Save the Day. Whether it was due to a mixture of ill-timed hormones or being too busy and needing a break I was having a hard time rallying periodically throughout the weekend. Each time I found myself feeling doubtful or just down I slicked on a powerfully bright red lipstick (essence stay matte lip cream in silky red) and felt better in mintues. I felt bold, polished and ready to say my mantra, if needed.
2. 38. That’s me! On my 38th birthday I ran up a mother of a hill without stopping to walk. I finally kicked that hill in the ass, like I wanted to all spring. I feel blessed to see another year, to spend more time with my family and friends and know that I can keep building a strong emotional, physical and mental core that will see me through to 39 and beyond.
3. The Power of Silence. On Monday, I was feeling particularly sour. With no plans, nothing on the books for my birthday and no desire to actually create them myself, I just sat in my closet feeling out of sorts. I slapped on that red lipstick again, causing H to say, “WHOA! Bright.” Uh, yup. And I took myself outside. Alone. I sat on my deck and read a magazine I had been gazing at longingly for weeks. I read it cover to cover and during that time a bluebird sat on the rail three times to say hello. I sat some more, gazed at the river from my perch and felt the restorative power of silence like nobody’s business. It was just what I needed to let go of my earlier anger and feel at peace with the day.
Now all that being said, I’m loving these two looks for weekends this summer. Date night, beach weekend, whatever you want but one bag works with both.

Yesss, red lips instantly provide glam to any look – I’m obsessed! I also agree with your silent time. The husband and I commute together which is great most days, but there are some days when I miss driving alone just for the silence and reflection at the end of the day!
Love your summer look inspiration board, too!
Thanks for hosting! Carylee | morepiecesofme.com
