The Limited Dress Haul

On Cyber Monday I took advantage of The Limited's 50% off sale.  That's right, 50% off everything.  I thought it would be a great way to get something to wear to NYC and for the holidays.  So I ordered and this dressI was so excited when they got here on time, though a bit slower than I wanted (checking order status after four days, yelling at computer screen and myself for not creating a Limited account to track orders! GAH!), but in time for NYC.  So, whew! I usually fit into their clothes so well.  Not this time.  Not only did both dresses look horrific but one actually smelled like it had been worn and returned. Gross, red cap sleeve dress. Gross.  Don't party all night and think you can just arrive unnoticed!  Still, I order and shop at The … [Read more...]

The Forty Dollar Coat

On Black Friday I sat surrounded by family enjoying the fleeting time I had with all of them.  In the mountains of West Virginia there wasn't a Walmart or Best Buy to get into a frenzy about for over fifty miles.  When I saw a woman on CNN proclaiming that her favorite purchase from Black Friday was a coat she bought for $40 from Eddie Bauer I almost thought, "That's a decent deal."  But then she continued talking and said, "And I don't even need it!"  To this I yelled at the television, "So donate it!"  It was instantaneous and on gut instinct.  If  you don't need it, you probably will not use it.  If you do, it's not something you actually need anyway, so why not give it to someone who does.  I swear.I am a purger.  As much as my … [Read more...]

Where’s Mummy?

It's Labor Day weekend, y'all! Didn't it just feel like the kids were running screaming from the double doors of their schools and letting their papers fly out behind them and you were searching for the perfect summer jam? I know, me too. It's been chilly in the mornings, already. I don't know if I am quite ready to embrace that just yet. But get ready for fall we must. Here's a few ways to do just that. OPI's new Touring America Collection at The Find. Five Fall Fashion Trends at The DC Moms. I reveal my secret crush. That's not weird is it? Happy last barbecue, pool party and summer concert! Be safe. … [Read more...]

The Ugly Dress Edition

There are days when I just feel the need to add some oomph to my daily attire. I throw in a bracelet that I wouldn't normally wear or mix it up with different shoes, purse or color combinations.  I know it sounds pretty wild.  Maybe it is the onset of Blogher this week (Packing, schmacking...) but I have been browsing dresses. I've had way to much fun and coffee spewed this morning looking at this site.  The Biker Wedding section alone is worth it. Personally, the idea of a knitted wedding ball gown just never crossed my mind.  Not that there's anything wrong with that... Just one question- Are those pants I see on that multi-tiered orange mess? Is Flavor of Love still on?  Rock of Love?  No. Somehow though I think this dress would find a nice home on some VH-1 based reality … [Read more...]

Glamour Magazine, Joe Biden and Domestic Violence

I haven't been a reader of Glamour magazine since my college days, but I just might pick up the June issue. In it readers will find an interview with Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden as they talk about a cause they hold very dear to them, domestic violence. For over twenty years the Biden's have worked on this issue. I applaud that. Biden's likening of domestic violence being "worse than prison" is quite accurate. It works perfectly with Glamour's 'Tell Someone' campaign.Personally, I feel that this issue isn't played up enough. We have just past the one year mark for Yeardley Love. I live in a state that has the worst policies in the country for domestic abuse victims. Sixteen years after my own "prison break" I still suffer nightmares, flashbacks and the odd ticks … [Read more...]

Fall 2010 Trends

Fall.  It is going for a run with a cool breeze blowing set against a clear, blue sky.  The scent of a campfire and burning leaves in the air and pumpkins adorning doorsteps.  It is my favorite season and not just because of the bright bursts of color on the trees but also because it is a new fashion season.  Light and airy fabrics give way to thick tweeds and shearling, this year at least.  I flip through magazines and rip out pages pasting them to my bathroom door to give me inspiration through the season.  Make-up undergoes changes as well. I look for ways to incorporate the current fall's latest ideas on the cheap and what to splurge on.  It gives me a sense of renewal each time as I use what's hot with my classics.   Here's … [Read more...]

Falling into Motivation.

How cheesy is that title? I swear the Fall does funny things to me. It makes me insatiable. While the end of summer can cause me to feel a bit melancholy, leaving me with a feeling that the month of August is a never-ending series of Sundays, I look forward to Fall with its crisp air, golden sunlight and bright feelings of promise.I plot and plan.I leave post-it stickies on pages throughout fashion magazines and dream of cozy knits, over-the-knee boots and oversized bags studded with metallic hardware. My nails go from ballet slipper pink to blue satin overnight.I become my most motivated as well. Two years ago I spent the month of October working out every single day. I didn't know I had it in me. Today, marking the fourth day I worked out this week, I walked to the library with the girls. … [Read more...]

More Repulsive Than Crocs!

Yes, I loathe Crocs. I jump right on that hater bandwagon. I won't let my kids wear them and when I see friends of mine clogging around in those boats I seriously reconsider our friendship as I can't find friends as easily, luckily I got help from sites like chatempanada that help understand why I should make friends online. I don't care how "comfortable" they are. There is something to be said for not letting yourself go and Crocs to me are the epitome of "I no longer care how I look, in fact I haven't showered in days and I forgot what deodorant is" type attitude. You can dress those heinous rubber shoes up all you want. Line them with fur, put heels on them and they still end up in the clearance section of Dicks sporting goods by the droves. For a reason! Crocs, however don't have … [Read more...]

Anna Wintour to spotlight ‘Little Houses’

I'm giving you a quote to discuss today because my life recently consists of nocturnal journeys to the tiny tot bedrooms in my house and my current my main objective of the day is to find out exactly where that puke smell is coming from, I don't care who it came from, I just need to know the where.Anna Wintour, editor of the ginormous fashion tome known as Vogue, recently stated that the magazine will do a story about obesity. Be still my heart. Vogue is going to address something relevant? Fascinating. Can you tell I'm more of an Elle girl? I digress. Here's the quote, discuss in the comments. Really, people. I want some discussion. No more reading for free I say!"I'd just been on a trip to Minnesota, where I can only kindly describe most of the people I saw as little houses."Love the use … [Read more...]

Fashion Forward? No, Thanks.

Bwwwaaahahaahaa! And you thought that the days of floral leggings that make your legs look like they may have some new form of VD were long gone. Surprise!Look at these beauties! Yup. They're baaaack! All for the bargain price of $80 too. I think I owned a pair of these in the 80s or early 90s. I've blocked it out. They flatter no one and Contempo Casuals went out of business long ago. Oh, but wait! There's more... you can own some spiffy white ones with cooking utensils plastered on them as well. Because who doesn't want to own printed leggings with whisks on their ass. In other news, Graco has launched a podcast featuring me. It's all a bit embarrassing listening to me ramble about preparing for a second baby but if you are clamoring to hear my voice- go for it.If you are in the mood … [Read more...]
