This week in TMC Beauty we venture into a new arena.  I’m calling it experimental beauty.  And Oil Pulling makes an appearance.  Join me!

Who doesn’t like the idea of slathering caviar all over their face? I thought it certainly sounded a tad fab. When PUR attitude, created by David Pollock, sent me a jar of their ArbutiFADE Skin Brightening Caviar I was excited though skeptical.  I am obsessed with getting rid of a certain dark spot (thanks outdoor running!) on the left side of my face but so far have only found one product (too expensive) that worked.  Could a jar of ArbutiFADE ($42.50) do the trick?

I liked the fact that I could add the caviar to my serum or foundation and make it into a BB cream of sorts.  I like making “super” products in my bathroom.  But it didn’t work as well as I thought.  The “caviar” is really beads that needs to burst upon rubbing, mixing, friction and release the age reducing technology blended inside that promotes skin fading and skin renewal.  That only worked when I did it before mixing into a product or applying to my face and it was a mess in my hands. It was harder than I anticipated. I suppose I could have done it in a container but I don’t have time for that in the morning.  I was excited to use a fade product that was “safe” and didn’t contain Hydroquinone for lightening too.  I try to avoid those cancer causing ingredients, you know. It’s paraben, synthetic fragrance free and has no PEG’s, sulfates, glycol or petro-chemicals. All things I look for in a product.  I’m going to keep trying it. You can use it up to 2x a day for 6 weeks (that’s how long a jar lasts).  Maybe the spot will fade. If it does I will re-post.

On to another hot topic. One that is also seeing some controversy.  Can I just say it?  Oil Pulling.

When I first read about it I envisioned taking a swig from my olive oil bottle mid-dinner prep and almost gagged.  Then being the beauty person I am, I had to read up on it.  It still threw me.

I got some flack for not wanting to try alternative beauty ways.  Really? Me?!  And then Allison of Two Thirty Five Designs kind of called me out and I knew I had to just man up and try it myself.  I had to admit, I was just too curious and indeed, there was a whole jar of Organic Coconut Oil in my pantry looking for some side action.

It potentially whitens my teeth, takes away my allergies, removes plaque, bacteria, toxins, nasal stuffiness and more?  I’m game to shove a teaspoon or more into my mouth while I cook dinner. Because that’s how Allison described it.  Just set the kitchen timer, do it during your morning routine or for me, while I cook dinner and be done.  Also?  Not 20 minutes. I did it for 10.  And if you hate coconut you can use an organic olive, sesame or many other types of oil.  It was weird as the coconut oil melted into liquid in my mouth but hey, I went to a bathhouse and scrubbed my teeth with giant salt granules for as long as I could stand it for the same reason.  Why not?!  I prepped my next day’s coffee, I chopped veggies and unloaded my dishwasher.  BING! Done.  I spit and rinsed and went about cooking the rest of dinner.  I didn’t think anything other than, “Well, I tried it.”
Then something weird happened.
I had been sick mid-week with a stomach bug.  Three days later I was still dragging my butt all over the place and cranky.  Suddenly, at 5 o’clock on a Thursday evening I was binging around my kitchen feeling the best I had felt all week. DEAD.SERIOUS.
Then something weirder happened.
H came home and I told him that he just me #oilpulling (yeah, I did the lame Jimmy Fallon hand gesture) and he is totally used to me doing this stuff.  He said, “You know your teeth do look whiter.” WHAT?! I rant to the bathroom. I had forgotten!  THEY DID!  Coffee stains were gone!  Crazy!
And I’m hooked.
Oil Pulling.  It’s different and texture-wise it isn’t for everyone but I’ll be doing it again today.
