The weekend of Blogher is upon us! The biggest women's blogging conference world wide. The packing. It's done! I didn't end up packing 8 pairs of shoes! Huzzah! The train! It's here! Why does it smell so moldy? The Journey. It's long! For me, at least. Ok. So technically it is only 4 plus hours but when you factor in the hazmat spill that occured before your train even arrives, the automatic delays from train congestion and the people who insist on eating an intensely oinion-filled sandwich for what feels like the entire train trip it feels a whole lot longer. But, it is worth it, right? … [Read more...]
The Importance of UV-Protection for You and Your Kids

I wear my sunglasses all the time. ALL THE TIME. If it is winter, if it is dusk, if it is pre-dawn and I've been out rockin' till the early morn'. OK, who am I kidding. I am not out rockin' except for maybe once a year. Maybe. I bet I have my sunglasses on though. I wear them shoveling snow and even in the rain I can be seen sportin' my shades. It is something I started doing in high school right around the time I stopped wearing glasses and started wearing contacts. I cannot drive without sunglasses. I even wear them in the pool. My kids are a whole other story. One that is fairly sad given that my genes and my spouses already have passed on some weak eyesight in at least one of our kids. According to the Vision Council short-term exposure, like a day at the pool, can leave … [Read more...]
Lessons & Learning from Debbie Phelps

Yesterday I did the following things- I made plantable paper with the girls. That means we ground up paper, liquified it, added seeds and then let it dry back into paper. You can plant it and in a few weeks you'll have flowers. They will hopefully make great teacher gifts. I made my bed, changed diapers, saw the kids off to school, wrote a few blog posts and then drove into the city. In the city I had a fabulous lunch at Rasika with some fantastic blogging friends like Sarah, Emily, Shannon, Amie, and Elena. Debbie and Hilary Phelps were also there thanks to the fabulous women at the Century Council. … [Read more...]
What I Wore Wednesday

It's week two of the Get Dressed Challenge and I will admit to feeling uninspired. I'm worn out from the hectic schedule of last week and this week is going just as strong, if not more so with school spring programs, errands, appointments, work, the house, the kids and everything in between. I look at my closet and think, "Is there a sack in there I can just shove my arms and head into?" Blaaaah.. But press on I must! Or something sounding resolute. It is WiWW. Let's skip the dis on the flash. I'm working on being better about photos. Let's talk about the outfit instead. Skinny Jeans- Target $20 Striped Top- Old Navy (2011) $20 Red Patent-Leather Ballet Flats by 'Me Too' Lysette 2 Style $79.95 Check out the fabulous photos of other women with style too! … [Read more...]

Because Life Starts Now
The other day I felt such a feeling of frustration. I'm continuously telling my girls that if they want something in life be it today or tomorrow they have to go out and get it. "Ask for it! You want something? Ask. Don't just wish for what you want because as Mammy from 'Gone with the Wind' said, "Wishin' ain't gettin'." As a child who never asked for what they wanted, just wished and hoped for mind-reading, and always felt dissatisfied I have turned into an adult who is always working to change this type of attitude and behavior. So many of us don't and I see it everyday. Dissatisfied with jobs, marriages, friendships and our bodies. Yet we just continue to plod on in our old behavior, wishing for a miraculous change. Newsflash! Life is what YOU make of it. The following is from an … [Read more...]

22 Budget-Friendly Tips for Going Green

Attention Earthlings: It's time once again for that annual celebration of all things green. Earth Day is nearly upon us and, while many people offer advice on being kind to Mother Earth, too many of these tips don't quite coincide with frugal lifestyles. In an effort to dovetail these two purposes, we offer 22 budget-friendly ways to go green in honor of April 22. 1. Sign up for the "no solicitation" registry. That way, you can avoid getting credit card offers and other ads which will reduce paper clutter and save trees. 2. Shop online to reduce your carbon footprint and save money. The abundance of online coupons from such sites as FreeShipping.org makes this green … [Read more...]
