The Avon Walk- A Restoration of Hope

Cross-posted and archived from DC Metro Moms.  Original post date May 8, 2008.  It's walk weekend again so I'm posting this.In some ways I am still reeling from completing the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer this past weekend. Maybe it is due to the surprise visit I had from a dear old friend or simply the fact that my sleeping bag is still airing out on my deck. However I may be feeling, it was worth it! Every blister, every painful step, even the rest stops that lacked water and Gatorade it was worth it and not just because it was the first year I did not have to lie in a puddle soaked sleeping bag all night. It was my fourth year completing the walk and the second that my aunt is cancer-free. Each year it seems the list of who I walk for just gets longer and I remind myself that … [Read more...]

Letting My Domestic Diva Out

Cross-posted and archived from DC Metro Moms.  Original post date April 23, 2008.The birds are chirping. The windows are open and the pollen is making its way inside my own home. What's that you say? It is time for what? Oh right. The inevitable urge I get this time each year to go all crazy lady on my house and my yard. Everything must be new! Everything must be organized! Everything must be clean, fresh and tidy! Skedaddle you dust bunnies! Be gone weeds or is that weed be gone? This year I am a bit behind. The prolonged, never-ending feeling of sickness has been pervasive in my house since I creeped into my seventh week of pregnancy. Now almost at the end of the first trimester it still drags me down into its afternoon nap time abyss. The act of unloading or loading the dishwasher … [Read more...]

New Obsessions

Cross-posted from DC Metro Moms.  Original post date April 10, 2008. I used to obsess about handbags and cute sandals. Really. Just weeks ago. Accessories and nail polishes were like air to me. These days all my creative juices seem sapped by a guppy-sized being inhabiting my lower regions. My desires for cute butt jeans and wedge heels have transferred to working myself into a lather over just the idea of a Pizza Hut pan pizza only for me. When I sit down to work all I can think of is how brownies repulse me and the idea of a nachos bell grande seems like pure bliss. My house never feels clean and I want to change my sheets daily. I yearn to plant acres of flowers and all ideas of baking, my old hobby, have been put aside. House cleaning services make maintaining a tidy home … [Read more...]

Screw Dora the Explorer and Those Disney Princesses Too!

I don't like dressing my kids in cartoon characters.  It's a real pet peeve of mine.  Cars, Disney Princesses, Dora the Explorer, what have you.  It looks cheap and makes your kid a walking billboard for stuff that doesn't need any more advertisement.  I mean, really, Disney. Really?  They need another dime from me?  Bah! Giving more money to Disney is like giving more money to Mr. Burns.  Neither of them need more money. … [Read more...]

Where’s Mummy?

My mind is all about my upcoming trip to Kentucky for work this week and taking TD to the doctor to see what we can do about the tantrums.  So far we've developed pie charts.  Don't laugh.  It's true. We sat her down on Sunday and drew diagrams of how her tantrums effect the house and don't give her what she wants.  The pie charts showed her the time she has in the day and the activities she has as well as how it works for us, her parents.  It seemed to sink in better than us just yammering away at her.  We'll see.  I'm crossing every finger and toe right now and saying a bunch of huge prayers that we have jumped over this giant hurdle.Other than all that- whew!- I'm busy with another giveaway at MPR. It's all about spring renewal- with nail polish, body … [Read more...]

Where’s Mummy?

The sound of a dog barking at an evil squirrel, a baby cries out and two sets of plastic dress up heels clack incessantly through the house.  These are the sounds of my life.  Tomorrow the house will be filled with fourteen girls squealing as a real live princess sings, dances and paints faces all to celebrate TD turning five.  Yeah, I went there.  Just this once, I swear! At Mummy's Product Reviews we are capping off the week with the final time to enter my beauty grab bag giveaway!  Enter NOW!  Just comment or tweet!  Mascara, bath cubes and more are yours for the taking!EvoraKids, Athenos Yogurt, Jessica Nails Spring 2011 collection, Splendid Littles for Target, and a book review of Half in Love by Linda Gray Sexton (Anne Sexton's daughter). On Rush Limbaugh and FLOTUS

My undies are in a bunch this week on a few things and all of them round back to our dear FLOTUS, Michelle Obama.First up- her cause to eat right and get moving. The woman is trying to combat the epidemic of unhealthy eating and living that we as a country seem to think is our right.  Is nothing more American than eating a giant Big Mac with a boat load of fries or sipping on a Big Gulp?  To some people, it is their given right as an American to load up on the fat, sugar and sodium- health be damned.  It's a disease, an addiction for some and for others economical factors play a huge role in not being able to eat in a balanced, healthy manner.  Mrs. Obama's campaign is to educate and create a dialog as well as resources to get a balanced diet into all of us.  Our … [Read more...]

Hallmark, Cupid, Candy and Bad Ideas

Valentines Day is just around the corner and while we won't be sipping expensive cham-pahg-nah by candlelight at our house.  Heck, my plan is to make the kids eat at their play table by tea light while H and I sit at the nearby dining room table and try not to have anyone bite, scratch, pinch or pull hair while we eat.  I'll probably have to bribe them with the sugar cookies we'll make earlier that day just to get a hot bite of food in my pie hole before a ref call is needed.H and I have spent a lot of Valentines Day's together and he has always done pretty well - he baked a cake for me in college, gave me a ginormous box of chocolates when I was hitting my due date with TD and all I wanted to do was sit my pregnant ass on the couch and literally eat a whole box of … [Read more...]

GoDaddy.com Super Bowl Commercial Equals FAIL

It is probably no surprise that I don't like GoDaddy.com commercials, especially during the Super Bowl. Their obvious attempt at using scantily clad women to draw people to their product isn't even tongue in cheek or even a cute, cheeky attempt at humor.  It's just dumb and contrived.  Imagine my delight when I discovered the Network Solutions (I swear this is NOT sponsored) commercial starring Cloris Leachman.  Now this is an ad that makes me want to visit its website.Adding in Blogher's very own Lisa Stone is just an added bonus.  I heart commercials that show people I have met and talked to and worked with IRL.  Who doesn't?  It's true too. We "geeks" want real answers to our tech issues and questions not women in leather flipping their hair and showing … [Read more...]
