Where’s Mummy?

Besides Idaho and back?  I've been flitting around the country this week, realizing that I am indeed grateful there will be no more airplane rides in my near future. I almost hurled over Denver and I'm sorry about that.  I got downright surly by the time I hit Dulles.  When you land and your phone instantly bings a text message reading, "Your Mom called. Something is wrong with Lex. I'm on my way home."  and then nothing, it's a bit disconcerting.  So I'm back and Lex is at the animal hospital. Again.  2010 isn't proving to be the best year for her.  Seems she got bit by a snake yesterday afternoon and swelled in the face to ginormous proportions. I still haven't seen her.  She's been made comfortable but the swelling continues to grow and we just … [Read more...]

Walk the Walk

It's going to be a beautiful weekend here in the DC Metro area and I'm so relieved.  While I may not be walking this year, my teammates The Back of the Pack Walkers, will be taking part in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer this weekend.  26 miles for some, almost forty for others. It's quite a challenge and something I am immensely proud of them for.  They have trained through all sorts of weather.  Held fundraisers and raised over $1800 a piece to participate in this monumental, emotional and spirtiual event.  It's amazing. I know, I have done it four times and each time was a different and wonderful experience.  If you want to know more about the Back of the Pack Walkers (some still need to raise the $1800) or the Avon Walk visit here.  There is still … [Read more...]

I Don’t Just Write. I Speak in Public Too.

Recently, I had the pleasure of speaking to a local women's group. The topic for the night was Earth Day.  Along with me was a woman from my local Public Works office. After she discussed recycling, volunteerism and much more (There are over 22 trash companies serving my county and only two trash inspectors! Animal waste running into our rivers and streams is a HUGE issue. Blech.  Pick up your yard poop was the message.)  I got up, rather nervously, to speak about products that help you green your life.  After about a minute I found it quite easy speaking to this group of women. They were interested, had loads of questions and since I genuinely love the topic of green products I felt like I was on a roll.  I could have gone on for over an hour … [Read more...]

I Hear Tell of a Nor’Easter

I couldn't sleep when I got home from girls night last night.  Instead I turned on the tube and did some work.  After a few minutes I noticed that I had the local 11 o'clock news on and there was talk of a Nor'easter in these here parts.  And a bread index.  Yeah, you heard me.  A bread index.  The weatherman, who likes to be called "Topper" (don't get me started) has an image of a stack of bread loaves all piled up and he measures the severity of a storm by how many loaves of bread we should all go nutty and buy.  Apparently, we are at 'loaf seven'.  Can I coin that?  "We're at loaf seven, Captain!  She won't hold out much longer!!"  What the.... I thought.  Pffftt.. I don't buy it.I'm a New Englander. I cut my driving teeth … [Read more...]

A Barbie Dream House for Me

A reprint of a post from the past- all about a Christmas past.  Enjoy!  Be sure to check out MPR's Holiday Gift Guide- new items have been added! There it sat. Huge and under the tree. The tag insisted that I was correct, this big box from Santa/my grandparents was intended for only me. My five year-old brain was buzzing with ideas. I could barely contain my excitement. My mother kept warning me to stay away from the tree, "It's not time to open presents yet. Stop touching things and back away from the tree!" I think I might have done a little dance of protest before I backed away. I sat on my grandmother's paisley and floral couch and wondered, what could it be? A pony? It was certainly a large enough box. Then my mind settled on it. The only thing it could be. The only thing I … [Read more...]
