Shut it Off Now or the Blackberry Gets It

We leave for a week of beach time soon and while I'm busy packing and making list after crazy list on all the things we need to bring on this hopefully blissful beach side vacation, I am also in the process of powering down.  Yes, I am bringing my laptop with me while away but I've already set up my work email to vacation status.  The laptop is for short intervals of loading work onto sites and that is all.  I'm busy this week doing the advance work and while I'm away posts will load up automatically, I hope.  Add to the list that I have already been shutting off the drone of the media to get myself ready and I think I will be set for a total mind and body vacation.  Instead of watching TV on my laptop while getting dressed or listening to NPR or some loud, … [Read more...]

The Price of the Pump- That Old Boob Dilemma

Cross-posted from October 2007 DC Metro Moms. If you work outside the home and you plan to breastfeed after the birth of your child then there's a good chance that you probably already know what dilemma I'm talking about. Pumping. Will you be able to pump at work? Has your company made sufficient accommodations or are you going it on your own? When I gave birth to my daughter I knew without a doubt that I would breastfeed and it went off without a hitch. She was a natural. I was lucky. She was also colicky. I tried to persevere but even after I had already paid the rental fees on the pump for the next few months, I knew my days were numbered. My boob dilemma was rearing its ugly head. How was I going to pump at work? I had a cubicle without a door. Sure the walls were high but anyone … [Read more...]

At Seven Months I Lose It

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.  Actually, maybe it was just the worst of times.  The last few weeks have been a roller coaster ride of busy with a capital 'B' at our abode and in the last few days I began to crack.  Scary, large, saucer-eyes would appear in my skull as my jaw and fists would simultaneously clench.  My body was tired. It hurt and I felt like I had nothing left in me about an hour after waking.  By Wednesday afternoon I found myself sobbing randomly and it just continued.People tell me the third kid breaks you, but I just can't wait for the relief that will come at the end of this pregnancy.  What?  Don't look at me like I don't know what I am talking about, I know it will be a challenge having a third child.  … [Read more...]

My Inner Andy Rooney Comes Out. Again.

Changes are a'comin' to this household in the form of Baby Trois a.k.a the Fifth Element.  We purchased a slew of furniture last weekend to turn TD's solo room into a room for deux complete with bunk beds. I swear this time I will finish decorating the room.  Really, I will. The Comedian has been in the converted crib to toddler bed about a month or so now and with great success.  Since bed shopping this past weekend she wants to be in the room with TD at night too.  I am taking this all as a positive sign that once we move her over into the lower bunk she will adjust and be content.  Then the Internet stepped in with a cute little note in my inbox titled, "Is Your Toddler Ready for a Real Bed?"  Of … [Read more...]

Overheards- Jail Time

Scene:  The whole family is in the car.  We've been out all day furniture shopping for the girls new room.TD:  "How long is jail?"H and I exchange glances while idling at a stop light.  V:  "What do you mean, "How long is jail?"TD:  "Just tell me.  How. Long. IS. JAIL?!"  She is already exasperated.H and I exchange looks again.H: "Why do you want to know?"TD: "I just need to know is all!"  V: "OK, pumpkin listen, jail has various times.  It's not just one set time. So again, why do you want to know?"H: "It depends on what you have done.  If it is a small bad thing it isn't for very long. If it is a big bad thing it is for much longer."V: "Right.  Sometimes jail time is for the rest of your life too, if you have done something … [Read more...]

Embarrassing Moments in Pregnancy

It's not embarrassing enough to pee in a tiny cup each time I go to the doctor or to even pee in a jug for 24-hours straight.  I just lurve lugging around a jug of my own urine.  And keeping it in my fridge.  Tasty. No, pregnancy has many embarrassing moments.Take yesterday when my bra just about combusted.  At least that is what it felt like as it flew open with great force. Luckily, no one else seemed to notice and I was able to get the "girls", which these days are more like full-grown women, under control.Or how about all those lovely times I've peed myself when I'm not even aiming for a cup or jug.  I cough, sneeze or laugh too hard and there you have it.  It's to the point that when I do sneeze around H, he glances over nervously and does a pee … [Read more...]

We’re Doing Something Right

There are so many days, moments and even weeks where as a parent you wonder if you are doing anything right. It is hard to see the big picture and not be stuck in the muck and mire of daily living and realize that maybe; just maybe you are doing something right as the parents to your kids.I had a moment like that today. TD was playing with her dollhouse, something I bought for her with such great expectations at Christmastime and one of those toys that did not hit the mark. As she set up the house and played with the dolls, I heard her say, "It's OK. What seems to be the problem? Oh, well, if something is broken, that is OK. Just tell me and we'll try to fix it together." It seems small but it was in that quiet moment that I realized she is actually listening and learning to what we have … [Read more...]

Noname Yet

A few days ago I asked for baby name submissions both on the blog and Twitter.  When it comes to names it seems H and I have totally different tastes.  He has thrown in suggestions that are seventies throwbacks while I tend to like foreign or "old lady" names.  Both the TD and The Comedian have Presidents in their names but I think we are running out of options in that category. Can you really name a girl Fillmore, Polk or Bush?  No. No, you cannot.  Perhaps we need to get real creative and use Lincolnia, Quincy or Clevelandia? … [Read more...]
