Is Feminism Bad?

There was a Slut Walk in DC this past weekend.  I have an uncomfortable itch discussing the topic of a Slut Walk in the same post as feminism, but that itch is because I am quite sure that some people think the two have to go hand in hand.  A Slut Walk, if you don't know, is a rally or protest to eradicate harassment and that women are what they wear. That is it not OK to harass or assault a person based on the length of their skirt or the amount of cleavage they are displaying.  That's not feminism. That is being a decent human being.  No one deserves to be raped, harassed or violated based on what they wear or how they look.  Trust me, I've been grabbed in the crotch before and I was wearing a sweater and a pair of black pants.  There was nothing about that … [Read more...]

Give it Up for Rhode Islander, Viola Davis & The Help

Kathryn Stockett, Emma Stone, Viola Davis Browsing my Entertainment Weekly and having just seen an advanced screening of the movie, The Help I read that actress, Viola Davis is from Central Falls, Rhode Island. Really?! She grew up in Narragansett and Central Falls? She went to RIC! I wonder if she longs for clamcakes like I do and thinks of crisp, clean lemony Del's drinks on long summer days. Does she crave Newport Creamery grilled cheese sandwiches? Does she actually know what Jai Alai is and doesn't just think it is some now defunct client from Mad Men? I bet she calls her turn signals directionals too. I already loved this woman for her roles in Doubt, Syriana, Without a Trace, Traveler, and State of Play. Now, I like her even more. Her portrayal of Abileen was spot on in The … [Read more...]

Random Musings

If Vampires are the undead and our hair is already dead does that mean that a vamp's hair is doubly dead?  Start thinking about that type of stuff and your brain goes in circles for hours.I have a theory about Sarah Palin.  While I think she was a fairly inept governor and would make a terrible leader for our country I do believe she has great managerial skills.  Meaning, she would make a great manager at your local Wal-mart (Target is too elitist for her) or Costco.  Think about how motivating her daily speeches would be to her sales team.  She could probably make district manager in no time!  … [Read more...]

Scaredy Cat

You know that old FDR quote, "We have nothing to fear, but fear itself?" Yeah, I think ol'Franklin took that from his wife, Eleanor. I'm reading My Year with Eleanor: A Memoir currently. While it is Noelle Hancock's memoir and journey with fear Eleanor's plight with fear is much highlighted too. I sat up at 3 a.m., unable to sleep, reading this book last night and thinking about how fear really is such a demotivator. Fear stops me from doing even the most minute things. Like take all three kids to the library for story time. Yes, really. When Hancock pushes herself to do things, small and large, to beat her battle with fear, it resonates with something I have been attempting all summer long. My fear of working less. To me, my job is who I am, it is how I define myself. If I am not hacking … [Read more...]

My Breaking Bad Addiction

You know you are addicted to Breaking Bad when,You yell things out like, "Yeah! Science!" for no reason. You begin to think that you could totally get away with wearing a pork pie hat.You start ending your sentences with the word, "yo". As in, "I'll get you your bottle in a minute, yo!"Tuco starts to seem like a better business partner than Gus. Hotel front desk bells give you the creeps. They may also incite ridiculous bouts of anger and thoughts of spittle. Just me? Hm....You start checking people's boots for silver-tipped skulls. Finally, you realize that your Breaking Bad addiction is like a real addiction. No one watches this show in groups, this show is for watching solo or with only one other person. Though I personally think that a game where everyone takes a drink each time Jesse … [Read more...]

When I was Seventeen

It was a very good year...  *Cough* Choke on a bit of barf. I really hate that song. However, I was reading BUST magazine's advice for your 17 year-old self and thought, "Man! Seventeen. That was the shit, yo."  Yeah, I really talk like that in my head.  I know it doesn't jive with my blond bob and pearls.  I started thinking back to seventeen.  Cue time travel swirls and...When I was seventeen...I played Stray Cats, Sexy & 17 almost non-stop.I drove around in my Volvo 240 DL, stopping at the local Stop & Shop to pick up sheet cakes, while listening to music like Regulate, Tempted, Green Day, and old Duran, Duran tunes.  Screw Nirvana, that wasn't my style.  Why were we picking up sheet cakes?  To eat of course and throw at each … [Read more...]

Status Report

I have been horribly negligent on this blog the last few months. Gone are the funny updates and overheards, so long to the rants and raves. I just haven't had it in me. My creativity and time have dried up like the bottom of a Nevada lake bed. I am parched for posts. I can't put my finger on it, but since I have started to actively try and cut back on my work life and engage more in my real life this portion of my writing has just gone to the wayside. There's been more of thisand you readers have dropped off. While I don't love it, I do love that I've enjoyed making homemade mojitos with fresh mint from my CSA. Growing actual cucumbers in my backyard and figuring out that it is just fine that I am not the "crafty mom". I'm the baking mom. While some women do weekly projects with their kids … [Read more...]

Summer, Summer, Summertime….

Summer is officially upon us! It's time to hit the beach, neighborhood pool or fire hydrant. It's also a time that is loaded with Nostalgia. Yes, I am talking about it with a capital 'N'. As I type this I'm coincidentally wearing a t-shirt from my home state of Rhode Island. Nothing says summer to me quite like the shores of Rhode Island. Land of the oldest carousel, clam cakes, Del's Lemonade and salt ponds with the scent of beach plums in the air. The beaches there are simple. There are not a lot of snack bars or distractions. It is just stretches of soft, golden sand, cold Atlantic ocean and views that put the movie Jaws never far from your mind. It's one of the reasons why I watch that masterful movie at the start of every summer. It completely gets me in the mood for these warmer … [Read more...]
