The Avon Walk- A Restoration of Hope

Cross-posted and archived from DC Metro Moms.  Original post date May 8, 2008.  It's walk weekend again so I'm posting this.In some ways I am still reeling from completing the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer this past weekend. Maybe it is due to the surprise visit I had from a dear old friend or simply the fact that my sleeping bag is still airing out on my deck. However I may be feeling, it was worth it! Every blister, every painful step, even the rest stops that lacked water and Gatorade it was worth it and not just because it was the first year I did not have to lie in a puddle soaked sleeping bag all night. It was my fourth year completing the walk and the second that my aunt is cancer-free. Each year it seems the list of who I walk for just gets longer and I remind myself that … [Read more...]

If you support him on this one, well what starts with a 'ch' and rhymes with Trump? Yeah, that's what you'll be. I just want to know when did we become so bogged down with BS like this? Was it when we went 24/7 with the news? Is the internet to blame? Did the Lewinsky mess just catapult us over into full-time "we need a scandal" mode and establish a new realm of disrspect for the President and its office? We can't have things both ways. We can't demand … [Read more...]

My Name is Vicky and I am Type A.

There are days where you just have to stop and collect yourself and yesterday was one of them. It wasn't a Ferris Beuller, "Sometimes you just have to stop and look around for a while." moment either. It was more like a "Damn! My shit is all apart and if I don't get a moment to myself my little Type A personality is going to go fuck nuts, ham-sandwich crazy."Short version-The Fifth Element is teething? Has an ear infection? I wish I knew. Is on a nursing strike. Just feels like screaming at me to prove she is way more of a dictator than her older sister. Mussolini, I believe you have met Stalin? The world's most serious baby has decided she is sick of the family declaring her "mild, sweet and third baby." Nope. It is all anger management with her these days. The Comedian sensing that … [Read more...]

Happy Birthday H!

It's H's birthday today. I wish there was a way to surprise him with an in-person birthday wish but that is a bit hard to do when he is in Hawaii for work. I wonder if paradise is just that when you are there without friends or family and you are in a hotel room last designed when Eisenhower was in office. So today H here are my wishes for you-If the Nats play today, I hope they win. (Hey, I can't be checkin' baseball schedules. I've got a blog empire to run and three kids to mold.)You find at least one meal on that island that is memorable in a Diners, Drive-in's and Dive sort of way. No Kitchen Nightmare type establishments today. Rock Star comes on the hotel room TV for you. That you know just how much we love you and miss you and can't wait for you to come home. It's been a long two … [Read more...]

Your Female Andy Rooney

Is it just me or is the weather getting really freaky lately? Spring lasted all of a day here and then came summer. Throw in a few near biblical storms and I am beginning to think I might need hailing frog insurance.  I will not be wearing any striped stockings or ruby slippers any time soon.I put 'Remedy Oil' on my knees last night before bed. Not only does that make me sound old but it seems like something Laura Ingalls Wilder would have bought from a tinker by the side of the road.I told The Comedian that her whining "does not become her". Move over Joan Crawford. Betty Draper has apparently taken over.*Image from kenlevine.blogspot.com … [Read more...]

Letting My Domestic Diva Out

Cross-posted and archived from DC Metro Moms.  Original post date April 23, 2008.The birds are chirping. The windows are open and the pollen is making its way inside my own home. What's that you say? It is time for what? Oh right. The inevitable urge I get this time each year to go all crazy lady on my house and my yard. Everything must be new! Everything must be organized! Everything must be clean, fresh and tidy! Skedaddle you dust bunnies! Be gone weeds or is that weed be gone? This year I am a bit behind. The prolonged, never-ending feeling of sickness has been pervasive in my house since I creeped into my seventh week of pregnancy. Now almost at the end of the first trimester it still drags me down into its afternoon nap time abyss. The act of unloading or loading the dishwasher … [Read more...]

Reasons to Celebrate Earth Day

Sure, I could tell you to recycle and use cloth bags when shopping.  I could extol the virtues of 'green' cleaners and other household products and how I adore farmer's markets and buying local.  To me there is no other reason to help sustain our planet than places like these-Pictures from my home state of Rhode Island.  Happy Earth Day y'all.  Now go hug a tree and crunch some granola or what have you. … [Read more...]

Driving Your Car Into a River Does Not Make You Crazy

Lashanda Armstrong drove her four kids into the Hudson river last week, drowning herself and all but one child. Andrea Yates killed her children by drowning them in the bathtub. She thought they were possessed by demons. Banita Jacks killed her daughters last year and then lived for months with their decomposing bodies in her home. Are these women mentally disturbed or is something else going on?As I listened to 'Tell Me More', during my car ride down south, I was riveted by the topic that we women, mothers mainly, need to open up more and speak out about these feelings that are sometimes so dark and towards our children.http://www.npr.org/v2/?i=Going beyond two rounds of postpartum depression I can fully admit to having moments where as a mother I just wanted to run for the hills. Where I … [Read more...]

Guess I’m a Hooker

It may not be your thing but Planned Parenthood was there for me when I needed it. I was laid off, waiting tables, 24 years old and had no health insurance. Three years before I was told that I might have cervical cancer and I needed to continuously seek treatment for it and keep tabs on it. Planned Parenthood did that for me. They tested me every three months, performed my treatments and helped me get well. I am forever grateful. The past few weeks have been a non-stop smackdown on this orgnization and so many blatant lies about Planned Parenthood have been thrown around. Lies about funding and what the orgnization does. Why according to nut bag Glenn Beck Planned Parenthood is "only for hookers". Guess that makes me a big, ol' hooker then. Three kids later, if something happened to my … [Read more...]

Huzzah! Marriage Counseling for Everyone!

OK.  So I'm not giving away free counseling sessions or anything like that.  But I realized yesterday that frequently people ask me, "How is marriage counseling going these days?"  Yes, people do really ask me this. My most common reply is this, "You know, no one ever teaches you how to be married.  It's going really well. I don't know why more people don't do it." It's true.  They say that what you see from your parents relationship imprints itself on you as the model for how relationships and/or marriage should be.  However, that is a faulty template.  You were a child not seeing the whole picture of that relationship.  Almost as if you were the Titanic seeing only the tip of the iceberg and not what was lying just below the surface.  As a child you were immature and could not process … [Read more...]
