On Women & History

Two things I am passionate about- women and history.  I was a history major with a minor in women's studies.  If I had only known I was one class short of getting my certificate I would have done it.  C'est la vie.  March is Women's History Month.  Each week this month I will showcase a woman who made history.  Think of it as a light bit of education and a break from the pop culture snark we all take a big bite of these days.Loretta Walsh (1896-1925)  I'm a softy for this one.  She has my maiden name.  I like to think we are kin folk.  At age eighteen Loretta wanted to do her part to help with the war effort. She enlisted in the US Navy on March 17, 1917 becoming the first woman in the Armed Forces in a non-nursing role.  On March … [Read more...]

Charlie Sheen, Gadaffi and G.O.B. Bluth

Last night as H and I were having a bit of uninterrupted conversation I said to him, "You know I had a moment yesterday in the car where I realized that the more I hear Charlie Sheen and Gadaffi speak, the more they sound the same."It's true. One gives three hour speeches just to hear himself speak.  The other has an endless twitter stream that can't be stopped.  Both make no sense to anyone but their delusional selves.  Gadaffi says things that make me have a Seth and Amy moment a la SNL's 'Weekend Update'.  For instance stating that the people of Libya are fine and love him.  Revolts? What revolts? No problems to speak of here.   Um, "REALLY Gadaffi? REALLY?!"Charlie Sheen, Gadaffi and G.O.B. Bluth they are all starting to sound the same (yeah that … [Read more...]

Overheards- Will Work for Ambien

I was out running around town today and overheard this cell phone conversation."I'm not going to be taking Ambien and job searching anymore. That just didn't work out too well."Um... you think?  Geez.I once took Ambien and didn't go to bed right away and I thought a giant vine-like claw was coming out of my closet to eat me.  I also thought there were hills in my hallway.  I had a friend who fought her vacuum once because she thought it was an alien attacking her apartment.  Writer Jen Lancaster has even been known to stockpile Barbies and have Pottery Barn furniture sprees while using Ambien.  But job searching? That seems like the final frontier in Ambien abuse. … [Read more...]

Five. No Jive.

When TD was little she went nuts for the Elmo video, "Five. No Jive!"  That seems like eons ago. Today, my oldest girl, my first baby turns five.  When you were my little bean. I've been going through photos this week, looking over our past few years and seeing how she has changed and yet stayed the same.  Those same big eyes looked up at me as a baby that exude an excited charm today.  As a toddler her blond hair took its sweet time growing in and now look. You are tying your shoes, getting your own snacks, getting ready to ride the big yellow bus to kindergarten next year and already asking me if it is possible to be a "sweets maker", dancer, paleontologist, mommy, a writer and be just like me.  You melt my heart.  You make me smile with your funny words … [Read more...]

On Rush Limbaugh and FLOTUS

My undies are in a bunch this week on a few things and all of them round back to our dear FLOTUS, Michelle Obama.First up- her cause to eat right and get moving. The woman is trying to combat the epidemic of unhealthy eating and living that we as a country seem to think is our right.  Is nothing more American than eating a giant Big Mac with a boat load of fries or sipping on a Big Gulp?  To some people, it is their given right as an American to load up on the fat, sugar and sodium- health be damned.  It's a disease, an addiction for some and for others economical factors play a huge role in not being able to eat in a balanced, healthy manner.  Mrs. Obama's campaign is to educate and create a dialog as well as resources to get a balanced diet into all of us.  Our … [Read more...]

Behold! Embarrassing Ipod Songs Come to Life!

The other day I asked the goons over on Facebook what their most embarrassing songs were on their iPods. This is what I got.  NKOTB- The Right StuffThe entire Sasha Fierce album from an unlikely source.Christopher Cross' "Sailing"  (Yeah, that's pretty bad.  But I have the theme song from the movie 'Arthur' by him so I'm in the same boat. Pun totally intended.) Dawn, this one's for you. Get zen.  Both songs make me feel like I'm five and riding in my parents Datsun 200SX while I chew on the upholstery piping.  Lisa, Lisa and the Cult JamAll Night Long by Lionel RichieSexy Back by Justin Timberlake (Oh, I'm sorry?  That's embarrassing? Embarrassing is having 'Dick in a Box' on your iPod. Everyone has Sexy Back.)Jesse Mccartney, Beautiful Soul.  (I don't … [Read more...]

Happy Valentine’s Day!

I could so easily turn this into some saptastic post about how much I love Valentines Day.  I do.  Bite me, about the commercialization.  It's my Dad's birthday (say 'Happy Birthday!' to my Dad, Internets!) and I just love sending Valentines to people. I'm a dork, I know. Go ahead and say it.  Plus, red is my favorite color.  I could fill you in on all the non-crafty craft projects I've done with my kids that include giving them heart post-it's because I'm that lame.  You want a craft kid?  Here! It's paper that sticks to things!  Here's a red nub of a crayon. Have it!  Isn't this fun, huh?  Heh.  There are hearts.  There are flowers.  There's even candy. Now above the fridge because some two year-old felt it … [Read more...]

A D-MER Survivor Speaks

I don't often venture into the arena of breast-feeding.  It's a twisted, hugely opinionated topic that has many pieces to it.  To me the topic itself is a largely personal issue that I don't think can be labeled as just either "Feeders" and "Non-Feeders".  I have nursed all three of my children, but differently each time and for differing reasons with each child as well.  It's like those ubiquitous Facebook descriptions for a wide array of relationship statuses that can only be labeled as, "It's Complicated".  I don't like to openly go on and on on regarding my feelings towards breast-feeding precisely for these reasons- it's complicated and personal for each and every mother/child combination. I don't expect anyone else to agree or understand the … [Read more...]

GoDaddy.com Super Bowl Commercial Equals FAIL

It is probably no surprise that I don't like GoDaddy.com commercials, especially during the Super Bowl. Their obvious attempt at using scantily clad women to draw people to their product isn't even tongue in cheek or even a cute, cheeky attempt at humor.  It's just dumb and contrived.  Imagine my delight when I discovered the Network Solutions (I swear this is NOT sponsored) commercial starring Cloris Leachman.  Now this is an ad that makes me want to visit its website.Adding in Blogher's very own Lisa Stone is just an added bonus.  I heart commercials that show people I have met and talked to and worked with IRL.  Who doesn't?  It's true too. We "geeks" want real answers to our tech issues and questions not women in leather flipping their hair and showing … [Read more...]
