We are a family of book lovers. Reading is a priority in our house from stories at nap time to bedtime and everything in between. The kids have adopted our need to devour books and I’m always willing to check out new titles or head to the library.
Actually I think the library sort of hates our family. We come in like a hurricane, grab a bazillion books and leave a whirlwind of dust in our wake. Then six weeks later it happens all over again with a stack of late fees that makes my five year-old self blush with humility. Having late library books is like a mortal sin to me. The rest of my family feels no shame. I cringe.
This month we are reading a few great titles, some are just perfect for Halloween! Let’s explore!
For the Kids
Vampire Baby * by Kelly Bennett is one of those fun kids books that everyone likes to read. From my three year-old all the way up to H and I we all enjoy reading this book aloud at story time. Great for ages 4-8, it is the story of a big brother who is always being bitten by his baby sister Tootie. He is convinced she must be a vampire. He even tries to give her away to a vampire family at the local grocery store. A funny story about family loyalty and love it has cute illustrations.
With three girls under eight in my house The Birthday Triplets: Granny Rosie’s Amazing, Magical Day * by Kelly Tooman was bound to be a hit. What we discovered as we read it was that each triplet resembled each one of my girls. They loved that and the entire colorful, magical story about the birthday triplets Candi, Coco and Cookie coming to Granny Rosie’s rescue. Having mixed up a birthday party adventure that turns out wrong, Granny Rosie finds herself alone on her birthday and sad. The Birthday Triplets save the day offering love, fun, kindness and the gift of sharing. It is such a sweet book that has pretty illustrations that will appeal to many girls ages 3-8.
Ghost in the House* by Ammi-Joan Paquette is a delightful tale about a little ghost all alone in a scary, unknown house. My kids love the sweet twist of an ending. This book is for ages 3-7, the preschool set will particularly enjoy this book about a ghost who makes friends while gliding through a spooky house. Not scary at all it is quite a cute and enjoyable read. In fact, we have been reading it almost daily since we got it.
For Adults
Unbridled : A Memoir* by Barbara McNally is all about self-empowerment. It is the story of a woman’s journey as she rediscovers her what passion is in life when she moves beyond marriage, motherhood, and work. The book and Barbara ask the questions, “If you had the opportunity to start a new life tomorrow, would you take it?” “What would you choose to do, see, and experience?” Kids or no kids, married or not these questions are hard ones and often scary to even ask ourselves and let alone proceed down the path. The book is both funny and inspiring with lots of honest moments that lead to soulful discoveries. A good read for all women, regardless of age, I think.
