Summer Secrets by Jane Green

It’s the summertime! For those of us who like to devour books by the day or week that can mean only one thing. SUMMER BEACH READS!

If you are dying for a great read while you are vacationing or just taking a little weekend escape then I have a wonderful read for you. Summer Secrets: A Novel by Jane Green.

Straight up, I read it as fast as I could last week before we left for the Fourth. In fact, H was packing up to leave and I was still lying on the bed trying to finish up the last few pages before we headed out.  It was worth it.  I couldn’t put it down.  It was light enough to be enjoyable while sitting on my porch or by the pool but had depth and detail in the story to keep me rooting for the characters.

A little more about it…

A shocking family secret is revealed to Cat, a twenty-something journalist that sends her into a spiral. Naturally. Wild nights out in London and intense hangovers and blackouts become her norm, leading to a terrible mistake one night while visiting family in America, on the island of Nantucket. She finds that she can’t forgive herself and she returns home to deal with the reality of her alcoholism.

Years go by, she becomes a struggling single mother who holds her new sobriety close.  But she still needs to make amends for her mistake with her family.  Will they forgive her?  There’s a twist and some heartbreak but it is written beautifully and made me yearn to go back home and spend a summer on my own home turf of the beaches of Rhode Island.  Green captures that beach community feeling perfectly.

Summer Secrets is a compelling drama and a beautiful story about relationships, betrayals, and forgiveness; about accepting the things we cannot change, finding the courage to change the things we can, and being strong enough to weather the storms.  Perfect summertime reading, am I right?
