Newly redesigned the 2016 Kia Optima SX LTD offers turbocharged performance without the hefty price tag that power can sometimes command.

I was pleasantly surprised by the ‘Horizon Blue’ Kia Optima SX LTD that arrived in my driveway earlier this month. It sparkled in the sun and showed off its quilted black interior nicely. I’ve been a fan of the Optima for a few years. It showcases the best that Kia has to offer not just in the sedan category, but also the brand as a whole providing a product that offers items as standard that normally would be considered extras while improving the actual driving experience as well. So how did the redesign fare?
Outside
There’s nothing I like more than letting in a little light. The Kia Optima boasts a standard panoramic sunroof that makes even a rainy day feel bright. Sport LED Rear Tail Lights and HID Headlights with auto-leveling and dynamic bending are all excellent. I love that while driving the lights automatically dim when other cars are approaching from the other direction. In addition, the ‘Smart Welcome’ feature, part of the controls features, automatically folds the side mirrors out and a light turns on at the door handle making it possible to just climb inside without fumbling for a button or handle in the dark. Stand behind or approach the trunk and it opens for you. It’s all very, “Look, Ma! No hands!” and who doesn’t love that? All of this because the key is on your person and all of it makes life easier and more seamless.

This is where I really enjoyed my time with the Kia Optima SX LTD. The SX LTD package included black Nappa leather stitched in a quilted design. I’m noticing this on a lot of interiors of cars that want to show off a little bit more attention to detail. While there are many cars to compete with the Optima in the five-passenger sedan line up I think the small things like this do add up and create a better cabin feel and atmosphere.
The addition of the Harmon Kardon OLS Premium surround sound made me squeal. I love when music can sound its best and the Optima plays that up. Also included as a standard feature are steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, automatic high-beam headlights, adaptive cruise control, a lane departure warning system, rear cross traffic alert, blind spot detection and a front collision warning system. All ways that make your daily driving experience not just safer but more pleasant. An 8-inch touchscreen display with navigation, Bluetooth and Sirius XM are also included as well as the UVO system that allows driver restrictions, perfect for those with new drivers.

My kids were enamored with the rear sunshades, but I fell in love with the 360-degree parking camera system that allows you to not only see the back with a rearview camera but all around you. When you have a long and winding driveway like mine the parking camera system is a thing of beauty. I struggle daily with backing out of my driveway and for the first time I didn’t have to with this 360-degree view. It’s a very welcome addition. I can’t wait to see more of it in the future.
Get to know the Kia Optima a little more.
The Drive
I wanted to notice the 2.0L Turbo GDI 4-Cyl engine, but I didn’t. The Optima is a smooth driving experience and what you would expect in a four-door sedan. It is quiet in the cabin with a noticeable reduction in road noise. However, the power of a turbo sadly wasn’t there. I wasn’t in love with steering either but that may just be my sensitivity. I tend to notice it more in a Kia than any other brand. The connectivity to the road isn’t there for me. Turning is good and braking is standard. So instead turn inward again and focus on the above-class quiet the cabin offers and its comfort there.
Final Thoughts
The Optima provides a safe, comfortable ride that many drivers will love every time they hit the road. Whether it is a long drive or a daily commute the Optima is a viable option in its class. Fuel economy is 25 mpg combined with 32 highway/22 in the city which is standard. Offering five trim packages gives the buyer a lot to choose from at various price points starting at $21, 990 and finishing at around $37k, like the model I tested. If you are looking for a mid-size sedan for you or your family include the Optima in your shopping excursion. It proves again that Kia is always worth a look.
