I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, my neighborhood does some fun stuff, including throwing an “I Love the 80s” party last weekend. After winning best dressed I decided to put together a little guide for How to Dress for an 80’s Party.
I would say it is a definite trend too. My Facebook feed regularly fills up with throwback parties and people dressing prom jump suits; when let’s face it we could all be working at the school on the regular and no one would be suspecting us of being undercover cops.
STEP 1:
Are you a Madonna? Or do you identify with Molly Ringwald or a Joan Collins from Dynasty?
I choose Madonna. My hair is short and I knew I could work with it.
STEP 2: Take to the Internet and research the look.
I wanted something that wasn’t complicated. Could I use things I already own? Yes! The black shirt I wore is from Stitch Fix last year and the heels are ‘Flax’ from Nine West. I took to Pinterest for some ideas and decided that for me leggings without the frilly lace skirt was my favorite option. Prom dresses were too hard to find. I wanted really BIG HAIR from addcolor because I couldn’t get it that way in the actual 80s and that helped shape the outfit too.
STEP 3: Start Buying
I typed in “80s costume for women” on Amazon and picked out the rest. You can go the thrift store route, but for this look I knew I wasn’t going to find it. * Just remember to read the reviews on items before you click purchase because sometimes they run very small or sheer.
I bought all my items for me and for my husband from Amazon. I had ordered items from Forever 21 too but they didn’t work out as well. So give yourself enough time to cultivate the look. Otherwise you will be scrambling at the last minute when things do not look or fit right.
The final product won us best dressed at our 80’s party and we had a blast!
Feeling the heat with my partner in crime and his Miami Vice look.
