A Rhode Island specialty: the clamcake
Growing up in the southern part of Rhode Island meant a lot of things. Summer was a golden time abundant with summer gems. Pristine beaches punctuated with salty air that blew warm and damp after long frigid winters. Everything tastes better in summertime, am I right?
One of my favorite parts of summer in Rhode Island was and still is the crunchy on the outside doughy and soft on the inside: clamcake. Fry up the white cornmeal mixture tossed with quahogs (that’s a clam to you non-RI folks) and add a little bit of salt before noshing. Bliss! To me, it is a bite of summer each and every time I eat one. Now that I live outside DC I have brought this family favorite into my home.
Summer doesn’t officially start until we have made a batch of clamcakes.
I can’t wait to take the girls back to Rhode Island this summer for a little rest, relaxation and exploration of my home state.
Garnet Hill Garden Party Knit Dress
This dress from Garnet Hill, which I wore this Father’s Day, will definitely be making the “to pack” list. It isn’t just that it is classic New England style but versatile too. I can dress it up or down. I can roll it up in my bag and then put it on without any wrinkling. It’s universally flattering, soft to the touch and has a silk-like lining that feels fantastic.

It’s totally a RI thing. In other parts of New England they look more like a patty or actual cake. Not the same or as good.

Love your dress but completely related with the hometown goodness! Born and raised (and back to living) in southern MD, we have two food favorites and we are so proud…stuffed ham and crabs/crabcakes. We take pride in both and even though you get crabcakes all over the country, there’s nothing like the ones we make here 🙌🏻

Tiffani, My husband is from southern MD and I know exactly what you mean. He is crazy for crabs and is so picky about his crab cakes.
