We often think that winter is the most hazardous of driving seasons. That may be true with the snow, ice and sleet mess that can muck up the roadways but spring runs a close second. That old phrase, “April showers bring May flowers.” can signal heavy rain or even hail. Not to mention that springtime signals the end to hibernation for many animals. That’s why it is important to keep these tips and bits of advice in mind when hitting the road so you can drive safe this spring.
First, keep in mind that while the warmer temps make us want to get outdoors that means others are out on there too. More pedestrians and bikes are out and about. Stay alert and utilize your extra car features like blind spot monitoring and make sure your wipers and lights are in good working order. Ditto for your tire pressure. Winter potholes can do serious damage to not just your tires but your whole car if your tire pressure isn’t right.
Remember to Look Out For the Following:
- Beware of Wildlife. As spring approaches and the weather gets warmer many animals come out of hibernation. That means they will be crossing roadways and out in your local neighborhood streets. Be mindful of them because no one likes looking at roadkill on their morning commute.
- Construction. It’s out there. It’s everywhere in the spring months. Why? Because winter causes wear and tear on the roads and those potholes do not fix themselves. Slow your speed in construction zones, watch out for workers and their gear. Be mindful that messy winter roads bring spring construction to make way for all those summer road trips we love taking.
- Slippery When Wet. Wet roads from spring rains are a real danger. Rain and oil from cars do not mix and cause slippery road conditions. Wet pavement causes over 70% of weather-related crashes. Wet roads and flooding reduce your car’s ability to handle the road while increasing the distance it takes to stop your vehicle. Flooding and giant puddles can reduce your tire traction too. That can lead to hydroplaning and possibly causing an accident with other motorists. Be safe and take the proper safety precautions when driving on wet roads and during flooding.
- Vehicular Accidents. Driving safe this spring entails being wary of negligent drivers on the road. If you unfortunately get involved in a vehicular accident, contact an auto accident attorney or a car accident lawyer after reporting the incident to the authorities. On the other hand, if you’ve been involved in a drunk driving incident, make sure to consult with a drunk driving accident lawyer for proper legal advice.
