5 Golden Rules of Makeup for Your Skin

  1. Skin Care First

Developing a good skincare regimen is of the utmost importance, especially if you want your makeup to really have you glowing. The skin is the body’s largest organ, and it’s often overlooked. However, it’s important to start with healthy skin before applying anything. Not only do the products you include in your routine help you wake up with a fresh face every day, but also you will be thanking them years down the line. If you are pressed for time or have no interest in using several different products, try to at least include your favorite facial cleanser and moisturizer before you sleep and first thing in the morning.

Hygiene doesn’t just mean keeping your face and Custom Moist Towelettes fresh and clean. You should also be cleaning your makeup sponges and brushes routinely. Replace regularly used tools and products that you have had longer than 6 months to a year as this reduces the risk of bacteria buildup, especially in eye makeup products like mascaras and eyeliners.

  1. Know What’s In Your Cosmetics

This rule honestly applies to all substances you put on your body or ingest. Do your part in knowing exactly what is in the things you are using. Make sure all your cosmetics are FDA certified and be aware of differences between ingredients such as organic and inorganic pigments, alcohols, and sulfates. Try especially hard to avoid parabens as these preservative chemicals wreak havoc on your hormones and have been linked to both breast and skin cancer, yet are still found in a majority of cosmetics.

One highly contested issue in the cosmetic industry is animal testing. If this is an issue for you, then you may be disappointed to find out many popular brands (unless they are explicitly stating that they are cruelty-free) may still be practicing and/or benefiting from animal testing. There are some helpful apps and websites that can help you figure out exactly what your favorites and any new products you may want to try are made of.

  1. No Sleeping in Your Makeup

At night the body is set to rejuvenation mode and this definitely applies to your skin as well. Falling asleep with a full face or even with the remnants of foundation can clog your pores and lead to dull skin and the development of blackheads and acne. Sometimes the last thing you want to do after a long day is spending time washing your face. Thankfully, one slip up won’t ruin you, but try not to make it a habit. Your skin will reward you.

  1. Do’s and Don’t of Application
  • Face: Primer is not something everyone needs or loves, but depending on your concealer and foundation routine, it can add an extra layer of matte and help keep your products from fading as quickly. Liquid foundations are best for a full coverage look, without appearing caked on. When contouring, be sure you have the right blending tools so that no hard lines are noticeable.
  • Eyes: Take good care of your brows, as they help shape your face more than you may think. Over-plucking is one of the most common mistakes, so, when in doubt go to a professional. You may also consider having a permanent eye makeup. If you’re applying mascara, try tilting your head backward and brush left and right as opposed to pulling forward, this will limit clumping on the lid and make your lashes look fuller. Oftentimes, people apply eyeshadow in the wrong areas. A simple 3-color trick is to work up to your brow bone with your lightest shade, cover your lid in the medium shade and fill in your crease with the darker shade. Any added sparkle or glitter should stem from the inner corner of your eye.
  • Lips: If your eyes are bold, tone down your lip to something light and natural, and vice versa. Try applying a lip liner before your lipstick for a more defined look. If you’re drawn to the matte look, be sure to keep your lips moisturized with balm overnight as they can be very drying.
  1. Practice Makes Perfect and Confidence is Key

Makeup trends are constantly changing and new products are always being dropped. Don’t be afraid to try new things and test out new brands, that what samples are for after all. If you’re interested in trying a new look but unsure of where to start, don’t fret. Social media platforms are one of the best outlets for looking at reviews and tutorials when it comes to makeup and skincare. Makeup can be simplistic or a unique and personal form of art. Figuring out new looks and what works for you is a process of trial and error, but with enough confidence, you can rock anything.

There is an overwhelming amount of information out there about how you should properly apply makeup and care for your skin. Take everything with a grain of salt when it comes to figuring out what really works for you, as each body is different. With these tips, you will be walking out the door glowing every day.

These are all such great tips. I only recently started removing my makeup before bed. I always went to sleep with my make up on. But now in my 40’s, I have to be more diligent. And I am terrible about washing my make up brushes. I must get better about that! Thanks for the little reminders.
