Farewell to the Ford Flex

It was this very same time of year back in 2010 when I reviewed the Ford Flex back in 2010.  Yes, I am talking about cars again and with a bit of nostalgia. Why? Because I hold fond memories of this flat-roof, rib-sided wagon-like mobile.

The Flex: What is it?

When the Ford Flex arrived we had our third kid only a few months before. I was intrigued by the idea of having a car that was like both an SUV and a station wagon.  How would it drive? What kind of storage did this vehicle contain? In the end, what the heck is it?  Is it a crossover or an SUV? Maybe it is a station wagon?

“If you took an SUV and mated it with a station wagon you would get the Ford Flex.”

-Dominic Mason, my husband.

What looked like a funky mix of a wagon and SUV ended up being one of my all-time favorite automotive reviews. In the decade-plus that I reviewed cars, trucks, and SUVs the Ford Flex always stood out to me and my family.  The Flex stole my heart immediately. It also stole the hearts of everyone else who rode in it with me during the week-long time it was with my family.  We loved how it drove, the comfort, the storage and that its exterior looked different. There was nothing else on the market quite like it.  The Ford Flex was like this perfect combination of practicality and uniqueness.  Now Ford Motor Company is saying goodbye to the Ford Flex after a decade of production.

The Flex: Inspired by Fashion

The Ford Flex was created with a fashionable flair.  It was all mahogany inserts, quilted leather and offered a quiet, smooth ride.  During my time with the Flex, we went over the river and through the woods with it.  Yes, we went to grandma’s house for Thanksgiving to be precise.  Driving it we noticed that we were able to settle in as a family of five for three hours at a time quite easily. That trip gave us the time to really feel how it performed on the highway, dirt roads, and country lanes.  It was both a crossover and SUV but drove like a car.  I loved every minute of it.  Every time we saw one on the road even years later the whole family would exclaim, “Awww, a Flex!”

The Flex and the Future:

All good things must come to an end though, right?  After over a decade the Ford Motor Company is changing up its portfolio to meet customers’ demands.  The Ford Flex, a crossover wagon that sold best in big city markets like Los Angeles, Detroit, and San Francisco will be gone after this year.  Moving forward from 2020 and into a new decade Ford will pay more attention to producing vehicles in the SUV and truck arena with a focus on hybrid and electric models.  The automotive market is always changing with the needs of consumers. Sometimes that means we have to change things up and say good-bye to a fun, funky, family vehicle that always brought a smile to my face.

Aw, what a wonderful review of a vehicle that served you well for so many years. I am not much of a car gal myself, if it drives without a hitch, I am usually good to go. I actually just went from driving an SUV for many years to a Toyota Corolla. I was afraid I wouldn’t like the smaller vehicle but I actually kind of love it. It is comfortable and great on mileage. Thanks for sharing and linking up.
