For a long time I thought orthotics were not something anyone over the age of 70 needed or bought. Then my kid was recommended them by their doctor and I knew I needed to learn more about them. For my son it helps with their arch support and provides relief from pain. Without their removable orthotics their shoes never feel comfortable.

Why Orthotics Might be For You:

  1. Relief from Pain– orthotics help reduce pain or prevent pain from occurring. If you have been diagnosed with plantar fascia degeneration then you definitely want to look into orthotics. If needed, look into having your insurance to pay for them or use your HSA/FSA card to pay for them. I order my sons from the pharmacy when he needs a new pair and I can use all my ridiculous CVS coupons to apply towards the purchase and then have them delivered to the house. They can last a long time too which is always an added bonus. Some orthotics can last years.
  2. Treat Your Foot Problems- Like I said earlier, orthotics can treat your foot problems. From bursitis to tendinitis and even foot ulcers your orthotics can help you with your foot problems.
  3. Function Improvement– Orthotics can help you maintain overall good health for your ankles and feet. For optimal function, especially as you get older, you can help improve your balance, reduce overall stress on your body, and prevent and correct bad alignment in your feet.

When to See a Doctor:

It’s important to see a doctor before you try orthotics, especially the inserts. If you have persistent pain, especially in your heel area or your arches are giving you problems then it might be time to check in with your doctor. They can also write you a prescription for custom orthotics if those are necessary. Look through the list of reasons first before you make any decisions and then make your appointment.

1. Heel pain or pain when walking and standing is often an indicator of plantar fasciitis and orthotics would help.
2. A recent injury is another reason to get checked out. If you find you are walking in a different way to compensate for the injury and/or pain then please see a physician.
3. Uneven shoes are often a sign of improper foot alignment. Check your shoes for worn down areas especially on one side over another.
4. Flat feet or high arches can cause strain on your lower back and your ankles. Orthotics can help!

Favorites:

My favorite orthotics come from a few places and sources. My daughter loves Hoka running shoes and while pricey they are definitely worth it. My first pair was a set a sandals from Vionic over here. I wore them for years and absolutely loved them. When it comes to slippers I have two pairs that I like to swap in and out depending on my mood or look. These clog slippers are cute enough to wear out of the house and keep my feet toasty warm. I love how solid the soles feel without being rigid and how soft the lining feels too.
