What I Wore Wednesday

I felt inspired by a few posts from other wiww participants a few weeks back (So wish I could remember the ladies and credit them! Sorry!) and decided to break out a sweater I never wear.  Long story short, red is one of my favorite colors.  I used to wear it all the time. Now, I never do.  This time I broke out the red sweater from long ago, threw on a red-striped shirt and added some old school pearls.  … [Read more...]

Making Own Plates Saves Picky Eaters

As I write this I am pondering how best to give my kids a healthy but fun dinner. Tonight, I have a bit more time. I'm mixing onions, peppers and tomatoes with black beans to create a simple dinner of black bean nachos. The girls can add their own toppings once everything is heated and it is a light meal that makes dinner easier and more fun. They pile on the black olives, dollop on some sour cream and add a healthy bit of montery jack and cheddar cheese. Add some spice with salsa or hot sauce and their plates are full in no time. … [Read more...]

Calling a Family Meeting

I didn't grow up in a house that held family meetings.  Being an only child it was basically "This is what your father and I have decided and the way it is going to be."  Like it or lump it and sure, go ahead and smoke out your bedroom window.  You'll get tired of that bad habit some day.  Yet it was clear that in our home, a family of five, we need to do things a bit differently.  We are working with a lot of personalities, a lot of schedules and a short supply of patience more often than not.  Between school, work, activities and just life we were all feeling disconnected and discontent.  When my Mom gave me a Parents magazine a few weeks ago with an article about holding family meetings I sort of wanted to groan out loud and throw it in the recycling bin.  As it happens insomnia … [Read more...]

Being Green

Greens for St. Patrick's Day by veamason featuring john lewis There's still time to get your green on for St. Patrick's Day on Sunday.  Get inspired.  Throw on a mint colored scarf or pair of jeans.  Break out your emerald stud earrings and play up the eyes with hints of gold and green.  Or just piss someone off and wear orange. I do.    Happy St. Patrick's Day! … [Read more...]

What I Wore Wednesday

To quote Macklemore's 'Thrift Shop', "let's do some simple addition" that it doesn't take a genius to figure out this edition of what I wore Wednesday is all about simplifying.  It was pouring out.  It's March.  Every March I suddenly just get so sick of EVERYTHING that is in my closet.  My clothes feel itchy on me. They are too hot, not warm enough, just plain boring and awful and I end up wearing something like this-   … [Read more...]

My Favorite Things

Oprah has hers and I have mine. My won't massacre your budget like O's and many of the items can be found easily online and in your local stores. Time after time they have proved their worth,  a lot like the ones listed here at Refinery29. I'm so curious about that foundation and Benefit Erase Paste now.  … [Read more...]

What I Wore Wednesday

I went to a baby shower this weekend for an old college friend and decided to pair an A-line cobalt blue dress from ASOS with a cashmere Land's End sweater and Target booties.  Similar to what is tucked under the sweater below- … [Read more...]

Where’s Mummy?

So tired I forgot to take off my lashes! This week has been a blur.  There was the snoringly awful Oscars that I stayed up entirely too late for and a late night with a friend and a few missed workouts because I was too tired to move.  By Thursday I was useless and feeling queasy.  This seems to be a pattern I'm developing where I go and go and then despite my best efforts I crash.  I'm going for a physical next Monday and hopefully we can figure out what I can do with all this extra estrogen that is making me weepy, acne-prone and generally a malcontent 15 year-old who feels like crying one minute and blowing up the world the next.  I do have a new talent though.  I can now heat the house with my brand new set of hot flashes.  Aren't those fabulous?!  Mmmhmmm...  … [Read more...]

5 Tips to Eat Paleo Affordably

Almost a year ago it took a six year-old having overhearing a conversation between H & I about how when I ate foods with gluten my ovarian cysts were worse.  The month I ate gluten-free was a whole other fabulous feeling story.  TD looked at me and said, "So why don't you just not eat gluten..."  Uh, right, kid. Thanks.  … [Read more...]
