Hershey Half Marathon- FINISH!

A break from the norm. That's what I needed something fierce.  Weeks of doctor appointments, grieving and trying to find a way to normal resulted in me wondering if I was even prepared to run my second half-marathon. The first one was good but rough. Could I do it again with less training?  Could I relax and feel like myself again? Absolutely!  … [Read more...]

Where’s Mummy?

It has been busy here.  Per usual, right?  I mean there are three kids under six in this house and there's work, the laundry monster, life and all the phone calls, doctor appointments and trying to decipher the best course of action we need for The Fifth Element (how about a new name?).  It may seem like I'm not here much but it is because I'm also over at these places. The DC Moms and fall trends I adore. … [Read more...]

What I Wore Wednesday

Last week was hard.  There were many doctor appointments, phone calls to be made, insurance questions to be answered and I just felt like a used up dish rag most days.  To combat that feeling I went outside my comfort zone and paired my yellow jeans with a bright fuschia sweater and then went further adding a belt and leopard print flats. You know what?  It worked. I may look dead tired and frazzled but I didn't feel it quite so much.  That right there is why I love fashion. The Undecided Voter

I am a registered Independent and living with an undecided voter.  It means we get calls from both parties and our phone just never stops ringing. I've written before about the importance of exercising your right to vote, why it is important and how to get straight up facts on candidates without bias. I'm not even going to delve into how Facebook is the devil's fruit when it comes to an election season. Just enjoy one of my favorite videos from SNL this election season. … [Read more...]

Ten Miles Down. One Week Left

Sunday morning dawned early with a soft knock at my front door. It was six a.m. and my good friend was there to go on my longest and last training run for the Hershey Half-Marathon.  Ten miles stretched out before us in all manner of hills, paths, gravel roads and winding streets.  The air had a slight chill to it, the stars still visible and our way was illuminated by only a street lamp or passing car. … [Read more...]

When Something Isn’t Right

It's hard to know where to begin or if there was something I could have done differently.  I keep going back over the last few months, the last year, the last two years really and beyond that and wonder if there was something I did that brought us to where we are today. We knew this summer that things were different with The Fifth Element.  We chalked it up to the "terrible twos", the new summer schedule, all sorts of things until somewhere in the middle I began to think it was something else.  The tantrums, the hesitancy to play with kids she saw daily, the whispering of "no, no, no" until it became screams and frantic pleas to be held so close it felt like she wanted to meld into me completely. The sheer anxiety and desire to be held almost always was more than I could bear.  I … [Read more...]

What I Wore Wednesday

I had the cutest outfit all planned out.  I wore it actually and felt so fantastic in it all day. I was about to take a picture of myself in it when I realized that my youngest needed a diaper change.  No details but the outfit didn't survive.  I was crushed quite frankly.  No pictures.  I can only describe it.  Even Polyvore couldn't help me with possible photos.  It was a fashion tradgedy, people!  The bright green capri pants with the pewter ballet flats and matching bow-front belt looked so cute with a ruffled navy polo and my still glowing summer skin.  Alas, it was not meant to be. Fall is here now.  Let's see what I wore! … [Read more...]

This is Halloween!

In our house Halloween is one of the bigger events for our family during the year. It is the perfect way for us to really show how much we love the fall season, gather with friends and spend some time outdoors. Getting ready for the big night takes weeks, costumes are just a fraction of it, and it is full of many traditions that include pumpkin picking, fall festivals, pumpkin carving, decorating our home inside and out and of course, choosing a costume for all of six of our family members, including the dog. This year we decided to check out Kmart for our costume needs and the girls had a lot of fun browsing and designing their looks. … [Read more...]

Are You Registered to Vote?

October 12 is the last day to register to vote in my state, Virginia. Do you know the last day to register in your own state?  Are you registered, do you know what you need when you go to the polls on November 6, this year?  You better find out fast.  If you aren't registered yet, take some time to think about why you haven't done it and read this post from the past. For Goodness Sake Think of Alice Paul! Less than 100 years ago women fought for the right to vote. They fought long and hard battles staging protests and strikes in front of the White House. These women were the first people to protest in front of the White House ever. For women like Alice Paul and Lucy Burns, often described as militants, the decision to fight for the women’s right to vote was especially strong. These … [Read more...]
