Just Eat It

Just Eat It by victoriamason  I probably say those exact words more than once a day when I'm dealing with my kids.  While I like to cook I often dread making family meals because in a family five with three kids under ten years old you just can't please everyone. And when this time of year rolls around with extra holiday activities and festivities I find that we eat out more and more.  Finding a place that satisfies us all is our next hurdle. Where to Go Source: ElCactus Facebook page We break it down into a category and go from there.  Am I meeting a friend for a girls night?  Then Bistro Du Coin is a good spot.  Is it date night? Mintwood Place offers up some deliciously good American fare that is sure to please both H and I.  Maybe we are meeting a group and kids may or … [Read more...]

Share a Look. Share a Haircut.

There was a time when I wore a lot of black and it was totally a depiction of what was going on inside was showing on the outside.  I changed my hair color a lot and never felt comfortable in my own skin.  I didn't feel confident in anything and so when someone started telling me what to wear and especially how I should never wear my human hair wigs, I didn't even blink. That's right.  The classic pony tail was never allowed to happen on my head.  Always down.  Never up.  It was a sure sign of subliminal defiance when I broke things off and wore a bun in my hair one spring day.  Years later, while the memories are still there they don't hold value or sway like they once did.  I revel in black and how powerful I feel when I wear it.  Or whatever I want on any day.  And that includes … [Read more...]

Mother’s Day Gift Guide

One of my favorite pictures of my mother and I.  Coming out to support me at yet another race. Right between H's birthday and mine sits Mother's Day. I feel like if I don't get a jump on it while I'm planning his birthday then nothing will be available and no matter how wonderful or totally unique a gift is there won't be time to ship it to my own mother or his for Mother's Day. Which is May 10th this year in case you were also banking on having a lot more time just like me.  "I made these for you Mommy!"  While flowers are nice and will always work in a pinch I like to find something that is more personal, creative and offers value to the world and not just the recipient. Homemade wins hands down.  But what if you aren't the crafty sort? I found that just like I do over the … [Read more...]

Bing in the Classroom for Your School

In a few short weeks my little second grader will become a full-fledged third grade girl. I can't believe it. She ends the year with a full set of teeth, a few more inches on her height and a new awareness of the world around her that wasn't there a short nine months ago. Does that mean that she needs the latest celebrity gossip pop-up to flit across her computer screen in the classroom this year or next? No, it does not.  Are we, as parents, powerless to stop this kind of advertising to our kids even during school hours?  No, we are most certainly not! … [Read more...]

5 Summer Make-Up Must Have’s

This past weekend was Memorial Day, the unofficial start of the summer season.  The temperatures are rising, the pool is open and pretty soon we will all be feeling the heat 24/7.  That means taking a break from the heavier make-up. Think sunless tanner, soft peach blush, illuminators and a waterproof mascara. For me, I think less is more in the summer months. I’m too busy having fun, living a more laid back lifestyle to really care what my make-up looks like.  I tend to stick to the basics. … [Read more...]

Adding Style to My Workout with Reebok CrossTrainers

I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Reebok. I received a Famous Footwear gift card to purchase a pair of Reebok shoes to facilitate my review and to thank me for participating. The other day my girlfriend called me a workout fiend.  She may be right but that is not a bad thing.  I like to run, cross-train, do yoga, a barre workout or a mixture of all four every other day or at least three times a week.  It keeps me sane, sleeping well and feeling good when I can get my endorphins up and stress level down.  As much as I like doing all these things I sometimes lack the diligence in keeping my footwear up to date.  I use running shoes for cross-training half the time and that's not the best idea for my joints. Why do I do this?  Because I don't want to take … [Read more...]

Maintaining My Back-to-School Sanity

Disclosure:  This post was sponsored by The Motherhood for review and educational purposes only. All thoughts and opinions are TMC's only. Last week I decided to start my back-to-school shopping. As I strolled into the store I saw a sign reading, "Virginia Tax Free Day!" Oh, what a happy, lucky coincidence! I would buy my school supplies, coupons in hand and all three kids hanging off the cart and not have to pay taxes. Bonus! Clearly, my intuition failed me. As I walked through the store it was quiet and empty up front. Had a zombie apocalypse occurred without my knowledge? Should I find something sharp to beat off the brain-eaters we might encounter as we selected broad-tip markers? Wait. What is that buzzing sound? That my friends would be the total mayhem that was taking … [Read more...]

Making Own Plates Saves Picky Eaters

As I write this I am pondering how best to give my kids a healthy but fun dinner. Tonight, I have a bit more time. I'm mixing onions, peppers and tomatoes with black beans to create a simple dinner of black bean nachos. The girls can add their own toppings once everything is heated and it is a light meal that makes dinner easier and more fun. They pile on the black olives, dollop on some sour cream and add a healthy bit of montery jack and cheddar cheese. Add some spice with salsa or hot sauce and their plates are full in no time. … [Read more...]
